Interview with @hipsterhood Creator, Shilpi Roy (@Iplish)-Part 2!!!

Standard

Hey guys,

Happy Presidents Day. If you don’t live in the US, then I hope you have a good day as well. Anyways, here’s part 2 of my interview with Hipsterhood creator, Shilip Roy. This part of the interview contains some spoilers. Read at your own risk.

About the Show

Tell my readers a little about your show.

Hipsterhood is about two hipsters in Silverlake, Los Angeles (i.e. hipster-central) and their extremely awkward interactions as they try to build a meaningful connection.

Tell us about the main characters

The two main characters are how I Imagine most people act at some point in their life. They are both struggling with who they are and who they want to be.  They have to balance on the line between portraying themselves as part of a group (hipsters) and making sure that they retain their own individuality.  I think Faux Fur Girl is a little more self-aware than Cereal Guy, but we’ll see what happens in season 2.

Where did the concept for the show come from?

The concept for the show came from my identity crisis over buying skinny jeans (if you’ve seen the kickstarter video, you’ll know what I’m talking about). Once I realized that I might be turning into a hipster myself, I started observing people as I ran errands in my neighborhood, and I realized that sometimes I ‘d recognize someone, having seen them somewhere else in the neighborhood. But I never felt comfortable approaching them and saying “hi, I’ve seen you around” – that’s just not something you do in an urban environment. And that’s basically what led to season 1, which is all about the neuroses that Cereal Guy and Faux Fur Girl have trying to do a simple thing like saying “hi.”

What is a typical day on set like?

For me, it’s super fun. Up until you get on set, it’s kind of nightmare because of all the things you have to do, but once you’re there, it’s kind of like spending the day at Disneyland or something. It’s super fun.

What can we expect from season 2 of the show?

In season 2, Cereal Guy and Faux Fur Girl start dating! Kind-of. We’ll find out how hipsters date when it’s cool not to care. It’s going to involve some ping-pong, tattoos, produce, and much more!

You’re Kickstarting for season 2 of the show. What kinds of perks can people get for donating?

My personal favorite perk is the Hipsterhood Soundtrack we’re putting together. It’s going to be made up of lots of local bands and artists that I personally know have awesome music, but haven’t been able to reach a wide audience. Some of these musicians are people who do music in their spare time, and it’s really great music, but almost no one will ever hear it. With this soundtrack, we’ll be able to expose the Hipsterhood audience to music they literally will never hear anywhere else.

We also have stuff like “video chat with the cast” “download Hipsterhood season 2” even give exclusive access to the character’s playlists, so you can find out what kind of music our hipsters are listening to beyond careless whisper.

Three reasons people should watch the show who haven’t.

1. It’s fun.
2. I guarantee you’ll see something of yourself in the characters.
3. Episodes are only 2-3 minutes long, it’s not a huge commitment.

Why should people donate after watching the show?

Making a web series is a full-time job, but right now no one can make a living doing it. If you want me, or anyone to keep cranking them out, we have to rely on your donations and support to make it happen. I really hate having to ask for money, I don’t think you should pay for it, but right now, it’s kind of the only way to make the show happen.

Any last words?

I had a great time doing this interview! I mean, whatever.

Another Interview Down

Managed to get another interview under my belt. If you want to learn more about the show, you can check out their web site here or their YouTube channel here.

Stay tuned for an interview with my friend Rob Gokee, composer for some notable web series, which should be coming in the next couple of days.
